THE APPLICATION OF SATELLITE IMAGERY IN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT (5th to the 7th of June 2017)

This course focuses on the application of Remote Sensing in various environmental management processes such the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Visual Impact Assessments, Water use Licensing and monitoring and mapping and monitoring of invasive species.

Analyzing features in their spatial context assists in the identification of potential risks to the environment. Satellite imagery data enables us to detect, delineate, quantify, describe, and simulate risk to the environment at reduced costs. These may include:

  • Distribution of affected areas including derelict land
  • Identification of pollution sources
  • Land Use change mapping
  • Visual Impact Assessments
  • Slope and Terrain Analysis
  • Proximity Analysis

This course focuses on the processing and analysis of Remote Sensing data and presentation of spatial information in a more effective way that allows effective environmental management and planning and compliance to legislation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To expose participants to applications of Remote Sensing in environmental management.
  • To expose participants to Remote Sensing data capture, input, and preparation for environmental analysis.
  • To demonstrate to participant various satellite imagery analysis techniques.
  • To demonstrate to participants the use of imagery in identifying and mapping environmental risks such invasive species.
  • To develop a sound basis for understanding the operations of Remote Sensing in environmental management.
